Orford Tops List of Best Places to Live in the Sunday Times

$article->leadphoto->description

Orford, a charming fishing village on the Suffolk coast, has topped the best places to live in the Sunday Times, being the very best in the eastern UK.

"[T]hanks to its continued transformation into a foodie haven with the return of butcher Andrew Page alongside eateries such as Butley Orford Oysterage. Local lobster is sold on Saturdays in the village hall, which is also where the BBC presenter Nick Robinson, who has a second home in the area, gives talks. You can find a cottage in Orford for under £300,000. It is named the best place to live in the east."

Orford, undoubtedly one of the most charming and fascinating of all coastal villages in Suffolk, is just over a two hour drive from the hustle and bustle of London. Once a bustling port, now separated from the sea by the meandering river Ore and the shingle bank of Orford Ness – the largest shingle spit in Europe – where the red and white stripes of the Lighthouse still shines bright, Orford is such a pretty spot where you can walk, dine and slow down well.

While you look for your new home, stay in one of the wonderful self catering properties, take a lovely boat trip from the quay, visit the fine castle keep and the delightful array of shops, fine pubs, restaurants and tea rooms. Visit the Orford Country Market in Market Square, take a wonderful coastal walk, lunch at The Trinity Restaurant, or The Jolly Sailor with the family and take tea at Pump Street Bakery (the meringues are heavenly, and the doughnuts got a mention at last year's Oscars!) or The Riverside Tea Room with fabulous views over the river to the Ness and its iconic lighthouse - it's no wonder at all Orford is the best place to live in the east, if not in the whole of the United Kingdom!
