Help Save Orfordness Lighthouse

Orfordness Lighthouse is one of the most iconic buildings on the Suffolk coast. Standing tall and proud in stunning red and white the lighthouse can be seen from miles around and has guided sailors safely along the shoreline for centuries. The lighthouse made the headlines this week after strong waves and winds caused a devastating effect on the shingle covering the £15,000-worth of temporary defences the Orfordness Lighthouse Trust put down in spring 2014 and 2015.

The Trust works hard to maintain and preserve this historic landmark but it is believed that the lighthouse is on the brink of disaster and if repairs to the shingle that was ripped away are not carried out in the next few weeks, in all likelihood, it will not be standing in a year’s time.

Nicholas Gold, founding member of the Orfordness Lighthouse Trust, has launched an urgent appeal to raise £10,000 to carry out immediate repairs. If the money is raised it would be put towards adding two new layers of wrapped shingle, in high-performance geo-textile bonding,  to shore up the beach below the lighthouse. The hope is that this would keep the grade II listed lighthouse standing while funds are raised for a long term solution that could ensure its protection for another 20 years or more.

If you want to contribute to the appeal you can post donations to Orfordness Lighthouse Trust, Quay Street, Orford, Woodbridge, IP12 2NU. Donations can also be made through bank transfer Sort Code: 20-47-34 Account: 73879364. The trust can claim Gift Aid if people send their name and address, either by email via the trust website or with a posted donation.
