Foods to Fill the Pantry: Orford

Wherever you’re staying in Suffolk, there’s an abundance of local and independent produce just waiting to be discovered. We’ve compiled a list of our favourites to help you get the most of our county’s fantastic food, and help you on your way to stocking the quintessential Suffolk frigidaire.

Pump Street Bakery

Though a small, family-run bakery, Pump Street’s reputation and various awards are a testament to the exceptional standard of its goods; a trip to Suffolk let alone Orford would certainly be incomplete without a stop here. Previously crowned the BBC’s Best Food Producer, the Bakery’s mouthwatering delights have certainly caught the attention of not only locals but of fans worldwide; at the 2015 Oscars, director Mat Kirby credited the Bakery’s delicious rhubarb doughnuts in his acceptance speech for Best Live Action Short, gaining a fantastic amount of exposure for the business.

The bakery specialises in freshly baked sourdough breads but these aren’t the only goods that the team have perfected; handmade pastries, seasonal food and even chocolate are on the menu. You can rest assured that Pump Street’s focus is always on “quality first”, shying away from gimmicks with all produce made daily in the village. Irresistible!

Opening days are Wednesday - Saturday, 9am - 4pm, Sunday 10am-4pm, with the cafe also serving a range of artisan coffees (alongside the tasty treats!). Weekend brunch is served from 9am on Saturdays and 10am on Sundays, with lunch dishes available from 12pm on those days.

Pinney’s of Orford

Pinney's of Orford produce food of exceptionally high quality such as smoked salmon pate, taramasalata and roll mop herrings. All products are smoked in Pinney's smokehouses down by Butley Creek, and there is also a fresh fish counter where you can purchase daily catches from the fishing boats, with catches varying by season.

The frozen counter invites you to stock up on home produced cooking such as crab cakes, potted crabs or angels on horseback. Pinney's also sell a great selection of carefully chosen pickles, chutneys, flavoured oils, jams, jellies, smoked olives and delicious accompaniments, the perfect addition to a tasty lunch. For a quick and easy solution to a light supper how about a warming soup or pasta sauce?

Opening hours are Monday - Friday 10am - 4:30pm, Saturday 9am - 4:30pm and Sunday 10am - 4pm.

Suffolk Butcher, Orford General Store

Though Orford’s specialist Butcher’s shop has now sadly closed, pre-packed meat products continue to be available from existing suppliers. Providing all the basics as you would expect from a village shop, fruit and vegetables, bread and dairy continue to be stocked with a similar selection, with pies and cheese available from a deli counter.

Opening times are Monday - Saturday 8:30am - 5:30pm, Sunday 10am-4pm.

High House Fruit Farm

This fruit farm grows a wide variety of fruits, as well as stocking juice, preserves and a selection of frozen fruit throughout the year. You can buy pre-picked fruit in season or if you fancy it, you can pick your own. All food is sold locally, reducing food miles and benefitting the local economy.

Make sure to ring 01394 450450 to check availability before leaving the house.

Brinkley’s Fish

Situated right next door to Riverside Tea Rooms, Brinkley’s fish shed is run by the local fishermen and sells locally caught fish and shellfish, preserving a long tradition of Orford as a working fishing port. You'll be spoilt for choice!

Open at weekends for only the freshest of fish.
